Most patients initially feel the onset of their symptoms as fatigue. There can be accompanying bowel and intestinal changes as well, including some symptoms often related to irritable bowel syndrome. Because of the fatigue and the fact that most sufferers are women that range between age 30 and age 50, there is often a period of misdiagnosis before the issue is resolved. Women of this age are prone to other physical issues that can mimic the symptoms of Celiac disease, including chronic fatigue syndrome. Since most blood work will come back showing an iron deficiency, many physicians have historically stopped testing after prescribing iron supplements. Since the body is no longer properly digesting food and the allergen is still present in the body, these regimens do little to nothing to help assuage one’s symptoms. Eating a gluten free diet, however, can clear up the symptoms.
