It wasn’t until recently in the United States that much effort was put into the study of the psychological and societal effects of menopause among women, and how those effects differed in women going through menopause who lived in different cultures around the world. There are certain African cultures which, like the Japanese, feel that with age comes wisdom, and as women become elders they are treated with great respect by society. Because our Western culture tends to view aging as something akin to a crime that must be fought fiercely and put off as long as possible, it is believed that American women suffer more problems, emotionally and physically, when they are going through menopause than their counterparts in cultures that view aging in a more positive light. While it is still not proven beyond a doubt, it is widely believed that one’s culture and the way they view aging and treat the elderly may play a major role in the well being and symptoms of women who are going through menopause. Signs of Menopause Guide has more information about hot flashes, HRT, and menopause treatment.
