Keeping Your Grass Healthy Year Round

With Spring right around the corner, backyard B-B-Q’s and swimming pool parties aren’t too far off. Having a lush and green lawn ready for the family outdoor season is a must on the to-do list. First things first and this is fertilizing the grass after winter has ended. Fertilizer is not only helpful with growing grass but also makes the seed germinate better and faster. After the grass begins to grow, fertilizer helps make it thicker and healthier.  Fertilize four times each season, 60 days apart. Start in early spring about a month before growing season in your specific neck of the woods.

Many people make the mistake of mowing their lawn too short by setting their mower too low or on scalping. This must be avoided since it makes a shallow root system and thin patchy areas of grass. An ideal height to mow a summer lawn is 3 to 3.5 inches. By keeping your lawn a bit longer during the summer months, burning or dehydrating the grass can be avoided. The extra length of the grass shields the ground from the sun. Less water is evaporated, lessening the chance of the ground drying out.

Regular maintenance by keeping the grass watered is the next step in order. Ideally an in-ground automatic watering system is the best however if this is not possible then hand watering or using a sprinkler attached to your hose will do fine. Its best to water the lawn during the hotter months earlier in the morning around 10 a.m. and then again later in the evening after the sun has gone down. This will help to prevent the water from burning the grass since water evaporating quickly on the grass can burn it.
Now invite all of your neighbors over for a B-B-Q and watch as they drool over your lush, green, and well manicured lawn. A great way to relax after a job well done is on a hanging chair.
