Glass lampshades have been around for a long time as they were first made popular with the invention of the oil lamp. This is a product that has allowed users to increase the amount of light available and protect them from being burned by the flame or hot wax from a candle.

As time went by these lamp shades became more ornamented and eventually many of them obtained recognition as antiques. As the fuels used in the lamps changed over time so did the design of glass lampshades. In the early 19th century people began to use gas much more than oil and the reason for the shade changed from protection to cutting the glare from the bright flame.

Eventually the use of art glass became common in these lampshades. These days, glass lampshades can be found to complement nearly any interior decoration. They can have floral, geometric, fanciful or even animal designs. They are no longer limited to traditional choices. Some companies like the famous Tiffany’s, started making glass shapes in all shapes, colors and sizes. Indeed, watching a nature scene light up when the light is turned on is delightful. Larger lighting stores and also specialty shops have a vast selection of glass lampshades, and customers can order the kind of glass lampshade that suits their needs.

Prices for glass lampshades can vary greatly, anywhere from fifty dollars for a less expensive one which can be found in most department stores and home improvement stores like Home Depot, to several thousand. Just like a genuine Tiffany which can cost up to half a million dollars and even a Handel can cost $2000. But they are worth your money because they are either carefully hand-crafted or have a personal touch of the best designers. Whether you settle for an understated glass lampshade or an elaborate Tiffany, it will surely brighten your room and can always serve as a stunning centerpiece to any room.
